The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team picked up their eighth win of the season with a 7-0 victory over the De Paul Blue Demons. The Cats claimed victories on all nine courts at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
Fredrik Ask and Sumeet Shinde teamed up to take on Mathias Hambach and Filip Dzanko on court one. The Wildcat duo claimed the first two games before Hambach and Dzanko took the lead by winning three straight. The wins would be their last as Ask and Shinde clinched six straight to win the match, 8-3.
Finish second was the team of Matt Dunn and Mario Urquidi on court three. The Wildcat team claimed the first four games over Sten Leusnik and Jan-Willem Feilzer, who fought back to win the next game. Dunn and Urquidi answered with the next two wins before allowing two more to Leusnik and Feilzer. The teams traded wins to bring the match to 7-4 when Lausnik and Feilzer claimed their last win at 7-5 as Dunn and Urquidi won the next game to clinch the match 8-5.
On court two, Kieren Thompson and Naoki Takeda remained locked in a close battle with Adam Reinhart and Paul John. The Wildcat duo fell behind 1-0 but battled back to take the 3-1 lead. The teams traded wins and the Cats remained in the lead until Reinhard and John fought back to tie it at seven. With the doubles point clinched the court entered a tiebreaker. Thompson and Takeda fell behind 2-0 but fought back to tie it at two. Reinhart and John claimed the next point to reclaim the lead but the Cats answered with the next two points to take the 4-3 advantage. Reinhard and John won the next point to tie it at four but it would be their last as Thompson and Takeda won the tiebreaker 7-4.
In singles action, Thompson was first to finish in his match against Hambach on court two. Thompson, a junior from Brisbane, Australia won the first game but Hambach answered with the next win. Thompson claimed a second game but Hambach once again fought back to tie it at two. The win would mark the last for Hambach as Thompson claimed four straight to win the set, 6-2. In the second set, Thompson fell behind as Hambach won the first game but fought back to dominated competition and clinch six straight wins in the 6-1 decision.
On court four, Shinde was second to finish in his match against Feilzer. The sophomore from Pune, India dominated play, holdong Feilzer to only two wins in as many sets. In the first set, Shinde took the 2-0 lead before Feilzer claimed his only win of the 6-1 set. In the second set, Shinde clinched the first four games before Feilzer earned a win. Shinde claimed the next two wins in the 6-1 decision.
Wrapping up next was Andre Vidaller on court three. Viddaller, a junior from Santos, Brazil, won the first three games before Lausnik claimed a win. The two traded wins to bring the set to 5-3 before Vidaller clinched the set, 6-3. In the second set, Vidaller took the 2-0 lead before Lausnik earned a win. The two traded wins to bring the set to 3-2 when Vidaller won three straight to win the set, 6-2. The win marked the fourth point for the Wildcats and clinched the match in their favor.
On court five, Urquidi was next to finish in his match against John. The El Paso, Texas native earned the first three games when John battled back to tie the set at three. Urquidi claimed the next two games but John once again fought back to tie it at five. Urquidi earned the next two wins to win the set, 7-5. In the second set, the two traded wins, brining the score to 3-2 before Urquidi claimed two straight. John earned one more win before Urquidi clinched the set, 6-3.
Next to finish was Ask on court one. Ask and Dzanko fought a close first set, tying at one, three and four games before Ask claimed the set, 6-4. In the second set, the junior from Oslo, Norway fell behind 2-0 before earning a win. Ask would win only one more game as Dzanko took the set, 6-2. With the match already clinched the court entered a super tiebreaker where Ask fell behind 3-0 before earning a point. Dzanko claimed the next point but Ask continued to fight his way back, winning the next two. Dzanko earned another point before Ask battled back to win three straight and take the 6-5 lead. Dzanko earned two more points to reclaim the 7-6 lead before Ask won four straight to win 10-7.
Last to finish was Takeda on court six. The freshman from Oso, Japan earned the first two games before Reinhart came back to tie it at two. The two traded wins and Reinhart claimed the 5-4 lead before Takeda earned two straight to win the set, 7-5. In the second set, Takeda once again claimed the first two games before Reinhart claimed three straight to take the 3-2 lead. Takeda earned the next win to tie it at three but Reinhart answered with the next three wins to clinch the set, 6-3. The court entered a super tiebreaker where Takeda fought an uphill battle. Reinhart earned the first four points before Takeda began to battle back, winning three straight. Reinhart claimed the next two points, brining the score to 6-3, when Takeda answered with the next three points to tie it at six. Reinhart earned the next to points to reclaim the lead but Takeda battled back to win four straight and clinch the super tiebreaker, 10-8.
"The guys did a great job compering under tough winding condintions," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "They hung tough mentally and got the job done which was our main focus for the day."
With the win Arizona improves to 8-2 while De Paul falls to 3-6.
The Cats will take a week off before traveling to Denver, Colo. to play Texas Tech at noon.
