Cats Claw Pioneers, 5-2

The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team clinched their ninth victory of the season with a 5-2 defeat of the Denver Pioneers. The Cats clinched the doubles point and went on to win four singles matches at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion in Denver, Colo.

In doubles play, Giacomo Miccini and Mario Urquidi teamed up to play Fabio Biasion and Henry Criag on court two. The junior duo claimed the 8-5 victory, wrapping up first. Next to finish was the team of Kieren Thompson and Noaki Takeda on court three. The Arizona team topped Enej Bonin and Luke Manley, 8-5, clinching the doubles point for Arizona. On court one, Denver's Max Krammer and Jens Vorkefeld lead Fredrik Ask and Sumeet Shinde 7-5 when the match was called.

In singles action, Urquidi was first to finish in his match against Alex Clickenbeard. The junior from El Paso, Texas dominated play, holding Clickenbeard to only one win in two sets as he claimed the match, 6-0, 6-1. On court six, Takeda wrapped up next as he played Frederick Bjorne. The Arizona freshman, a native of Osoka, Japan, held Bjorne to two wins in as many sets as he claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Ask took on Vorkefeld on court one. The junior from Olso, Norway fell 7-6 (4), 6-1 for Arizona's first loss of the day.

Finishing fourth was Thompson on court three. Thompson, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, fought a close first set with Craig but came out on top, 7-6 (5). In the second set, Thompson dominated play, holding Craig to only one win in the 6-1 decision. The win marked the fourth point for Arizona and clinched the match in the Cats' favor. On court four, Shinde wrapped up next against Biasion. The sophomore from Pune, India dropped the first set, 6-1, but fought back to win the second, 6-1. The court entered a third set where Shinde was edged, 6-3.

Last to finish was Miccini on court two. The junior from Recanati, Italy dropped the first set, 6-2, to Krammer. Miccini bounced back to claim the second set, 6-2, and the court entered a third set. Miccini finished the day with a win for the Wildcats as he claimed the next set, 6-3. With the win Arizona improves to 9-3 while Denver falls to 3-9.

The Cats will return to LaNelle Robson Tennis Center to host TCU on Thursday, March 14. The teams are set to face off at 11:00 a.m.
