TUCSON, Ariz. – The 36th ranked Wildcats dominated from start to finish, as they took down Nevada, 5-0, Friday afternoon out at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
For Arizona (2-0), the win marked its second straight to start the season, while it has yet to allow an opponent to score a single point thus far.
“I was pleased with today's match,” said head coach Vicky Maes. “I didn't feel like we had great energy in the doubles, but we held on to win the point and did a much better job in the singles portion. Nevada is a good team. They fought us hard but our girls were able to pull away and close out the necessary matches.”
The Wildcats clinched the doubles point for a second straight match, as Laura Oldham and Devin Chypyha took down Elissa Pavelea and Sara Kornzeniecki 6-2 on court three, while Lauren Marker and Inge Hendrikx teamed up to defeat Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley, 6-3 on court two to secure the point.
Arizona kept its positive momentum rolling in singles play, as Inge Hendrikx (9-4, 2-0 Dual) dismantled Magusiak 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 5 position to spot the Cats a 2-0 lead.
Lauren Marker (7-3, 2-0 Dual) gave Arizona just what it wanted from the No. 1 position, as she earned a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win over Morales to put the Cats on the brink of victory, up 3-0.
Then it was Briar Preston (5-2, 2-0 Dual) who clinched it for UA, as she strung together a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Juliette Legendre on court two to make it a 4-0 advantage.
Devin Chypyha (4-5, 2-0 Dual) earned a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1 win over Sara Korzeniecki from the No. 6 position to bring the final to 5-0.
Both Shayne Austin and Oldham were winning their respective contests before the match was called.
Arizona is back in action, Sunday at 9 a.m. MST as it takes on Sacramento State.
