Match 1: Texas Tech 4, Arizona 0
LUBBOCK, Texas –- The Wildcats finished their last match of the weekend in Lubbock, Texas today against No. 17 Texas Tech. The Cats put up a fight during their first weekend back on the courts, but fell short in their last match, 0-4.
“Texas Tech is a very tough team top to bottom,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “I felt we definitely pushed them in a few spots, which is nice to see. We will see some teams at their level in the Pac-12, so it was a good learning experience for the guys.”
No. 52 Naoki Takeda won his first match against No. 8 Felipe Soares on court one, but the match was abandoned in the second set. Harry Busby was defeated 2-6, 1-6, by Hugo Dojas, on court two.
Jason Jaruvang was up 4-3 in his second set against No. 33 Alex Sendegeya on court three until the match was abandoned. Oliver Plaskett came into his second match strong but fell short to Jolan Cailleau, 2-6, 6-7 on court four.
Trevor James was defeated by Connor Curry on court five, 1-6, 0-6, while Will Adkisson was defeated by Bjorn Thomson on court six, 2-6, 2-6.
The Cats went a combined 2-3 over three days of matches in Lubbock, as they went up against No. 17 Texas Tech, No. 41 New Mexico and Pacific.
“All in all it was a positive weekend for us,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “We learned a lot about ourselves as a team, playing five matches over the weekend. We definitely have areas that we can improve upon but it is a nice start coming away with two quality wins over a ranked team in New Mexico.”
The Cats will be back on the courts this Saturday, as they will be hosting UC Riverside in their first home match of the season.
