Cats Drop Close Meet to UCLA, Face USC on Saturday

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Arizona women's swimming and diving dropped its first meet of the season against UCLA, 155.5-144.5. The Cats won five individual events in the meet, two of which coming from sophomore Annie Ochitwa, and both relays.

Ochitwa continued her win streak in the 100 back (58.83) and 100 fly (54.22). Also in the 100 fly, the sophomore already notched an NCAA 'B' cut finishing 27-hundredths of a second under the time standard. She later took second in the 200 IM with 2:02.74, the first time she hasn't won this season.

Sophomore Katrina Konopka also contributed points for Arizona, winning the 50 free (23.23). She was followed by teammate Morgan Ginnis (23.36). Konopka then was runner-up in the 100 free, touching in 50.23.

Freshman Kennedy Lohman continued her success in the 100 breast, taking first with a time of 1:03.91.

The swimmers were also members of the winning 200 medley relay team where Taylor Garcia, Lohman, Ochitwa and Konopka won with a time of 1:40.72. Konopka closed out the meet with Garcia, Paige Kremer and Sarah Shimomura taking first in the 200 free relay (1:32.14), but it wasn't enough to overtake UCLA.

The Cats went 1-3 in both relay events. Taylor Nations, Mallory Korenwinder, Mackenzie Rumrill and Ginnis placed third in the 200 medley relay with 1:43.21. In the 200 free relay, Ginnis, Ashley Sutherland, Cameron McHugh and Emma McCarthy captured third with 1:33.90.

Overall, Arizona won seven events and went 1-2-3 in two of those (100 fly, 1,000 free). In the 100 fly, Ochitwa won followed by Garcia (54.63) and Rumrill (55.13). Freshman Hannah Cox earned a victory in the 1,000 free (9:58.87) followed by junior Tjasa Oder (10:02.71) and sophomore Shimomura (10:04.44).

The Cats had at least two swimmers in the top three in seven individual events in addition to the two relays.
