HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ARIZONA ATHLETICS

The student-athletes, coaches and staffers of Arizona Athletics want to wish all of our Wildcat family a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a happy holiday season. We'll take the next few weeks off from Wildcat Wednesday and will return on Jan. 11. In the meantime, we hope you have a chance to spend some quality time with family and friends to soak in the joy of the holiday season.

KONOPKA MAKES HER MARK AT SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Katrina Konopka from women's swimming had a wonderful two days at the FINA Short Course World Championships last week, posting a world record, while earning two gold medals. The sophomore anchored the 4x50-meter medley relay to a gold medal and world record of 1:43.27. Swimming the freestyle leg, she split 23.93.

A day earlier, Katrina was part of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay that went on to earn a place on top of the podium. She swam the opening leg in the prelims for the American squad, which qualified her for a gold medal.

Congratulations Katrina (positioned left in the photo below) on your fine performances. Nice job representing Arizona at this prestigious meet.

ARIZONA BASKETBALL TO STRIPE OUT MCKALE

Our fans prove time and time again that they're the best in the nation. Our annual Stripe Out game accentuates the atmosphere in McKale and is coming up next Tuesday, Dec. 20 vs. New Mexico. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MST. Single-game tickets are still available for the game. Once you purchase your ticket, you'll receive a map (pictured below) showing which color to wear to help stripe out McKale.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Women's basketball will play four home games in 11 days over the holiday break. The Cats will start the home stand against Utah State on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 6 p.m., with the first 250 fans receiving a "Block A" ornament. The team will play their last non-conference game against Portland State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27 before they begin Pac-12 play versus Cal on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. We'll play our final home game during this stretch against a top-10 Stanford team at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1.

Celebrate the holidays and start the new year off right, by coming out to McKale to cheer on Coach Barnes and our women's basketball team. For tickets or more information, call (520) 621-CATS (M-F, 9-5 p.m.) or click HERE.

SPRING SPORTS COMING UP

The calendar is about to turn over to a new year, which means our 2017 spring sports seasons are coming up soon. Season tickets for these sports are still available.

First up is gymnastics, who were ranked 18th in the nation by the coaches entering the season. The GymCats open their season Friday, Jan. 6 with a tri-meet at McKale. Season tickets are only $20. It's the best deal in town, so click HERE to buy.

Expectations are high for Mike Candrea's softball team entering the 2017 campaign. This might be one of his most talented rosters in years, and that's saying something considering the program is coming off three consecutive Super Regional appearances. A limited amount of infield reserved season tickets are available and you won't want to miss the action at Hillenbrand this spring. Click HERE to buy.

The baseball team will also have high expectations coming off its run to the College World Series Finals in Jay Johnson's first year. A solid group of returners, along with an influx of talented newcomers, should make for a fun year at Hi Corbett. Click HERE to buy.

YEAR-END GIFT REMINDER

As we approach the holiday season and the new year, we'd love it if you kept Arizona's student-athletes in mind as you think about your year-end giving. Gifts to Arizona Athletics are considered tax deductible and are crucial to our success. If you are considering a year-end donation, we want to share a few reminders to ensure your donation is processed in this calendar year:

- Online Donations: All credit card charges must be processed by 11:59 p.m. MST on Dec. 31. The easiest way to donate is to click HERE.
- Mailed Checks: Must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2016.

With a gift of $100 or more, you will become a Wildcat Club member and gain access to annual giving benefits based on your giving level.

CATS IN THE COMMUNITY

Between studying for finals and preparing for the holidays, our Wildcats have been actively volunteering in the community. Many of our student-athletes spent time creating kits for survivors of domestic abuse. These kits will be donated locally upon completion as an ongoing effort to help those in need.

We also had representatives from our soccer and baseball programs join their coaches at the Bear Down Bite event this past Friday. The Bear Down Bite is an opportunity for Wildcat Club members to chow down and catch up with Arizona Athletics staff and student-athletes. The group spoke about life as student-athletes and what their seasons had in store for each of them.

Student-athletes have also recently volunteered with the University of Arizona Resource Center to help organize the 2016 Wildcat Clash Wheelchair Rugby Tournament by managing game time periods and keeping score.

Wildcats are also gearing up for the Cats Give Back effort that takes place each January. This effort helps to get 100% of our teams committed to volunteering in the local community.

If you know of a non-profit that would benefit from the helping hands of our student-athletes, please let us know by submitting an online request by clicking HERE. We won't be able to fulfill every request, but we try to get to as many as we can. If you have any questions, please contact Natasha Harrison at naharris@arizona.edu.
