TUCSON – Redshirt senior pitcher
Danielle O'Toole was selected to the U.S. Women's National Team while freshmen
Dejah Mulipola and
Jessie Harper were named to the U.S. Junior National Training Team following a week-long selection camp in Clearwater, Florida.
Â
"To be selected to the U.S. Women's National Team is an amazing honor," said O'Toole. "It was an honor to even be considered. It's been a dream to wear those three letters across my chest and now that I have the chance it's truly incredible. I'm excited for this experience and opportunity to play and learn from the players and coaches that represent USA Softball."
Â
Both the Women's National Team and the Junior Women's National Team will compete this summer in various international competitions, beginning with the World Cup of Softball XII in Oklahoma City, July 4-9.
Â
O'Toole becomes Arizona's 19th player in school history to compete of the U.S. Women's National Team and the fifth pitcher – first since Jennie Finch on the 2008 Olympic Team.
Â
O'Toole continues Arizona's deep history with USA Softball, which includes six Olympians and a two-time Olympic coach
Mike Candrea. Softball is set to return to the Olympics in 2020 for the first time in 12 years.
Â
"I'm very excited about our three Wildcats that will have a chance to represent the Greatest Country in the World – The United States of America," said Candrea. "I'm proud that they will have a chance to compete on the world stage and have an experience of a lifetime."
Â
The 20-player Women's National Team Roster is made up of 11 current collegiate players and nine former NCAA players. O'Toole is one of seven current Pac-12 players on the roster.
Â
"I'm very excited for Tooly (
Danielle O'Toole) and I know she will honor the opportunity to wear the USA uniform and make the most of this special occasion," said Candrea.
Â
Mulipola and Harper were two of 24 players named to the U.S. Junior National Training Team, which will go through one more round of cuts this summer. The duo makes Arizona the only team in the country with multiple current student-athletes on the Junior National Training Team.
Â
"Representing Team USA is a lifetime dream and I'm so proud of these two Wildcats," said Candrea. "This is just the beginning of a great opportunity to represent something bigger than any one person. They are great athletes and most of all, great teammates. I'm very proud of Jess and Dejah."
Â
O'Toole led the Pac-12 in victories (26) and finished third in ERA (2.17) and strikeouts (192) in her debut in the league last season. The senior was a first-team all-Pac-12 and all-region performer for Arizona in 2016. Freshmen Mulipola and Harper are set to begin their UA careers in February, but come to UA with decorated prep careers in Southern California.
Â
In all, the Wildcats had five players invited to the selection camps, three to the Junior Women's National Team camp and two to the Women's National team camp. Redshirt freshman
Alyssa Palomino (National Team) and UA signee Jenna Kean, a senior at Los Alamitos, California (Junior National Team) were also invited to try out.
Â
Palomino, the USA Softball Junior Female Athlete of the Year in 2016, was the only freshman invited to the U.S. Women's National Team selection camp.
Â
Up Next: Arizona opens up the 2017 season on Feb. 9, when the Wildcats host Fordham at 6 p.m. to kick off the Hillenbrand Invitational.
