Robbin' Hitters: In his first appearance of the season on Feb. 18, Robby Medel gave up two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. In his 10 appearances since, Medel hasn't given up a run. The junior right-hander has tossed 14 2/3 innings since his season debut, giving up eight hits –all singles—and no runs, while striking out 11. He has emerged as an important backend pitcher for the Wildcats in recent weeks. With Arizona trailing 4-1 against Utah on April 22, Medel gave his team plenty of chances to come back, tossing four shutout innings in relief to hold the Utes off the scoreboard further. He pitched twice last weekend at Stanford, tossing a total of 2 1/3 scoreless innings without giving up a hit. On the season for Medel, he has a 1.06 ERA in 17 innings. He's given up 12 hits, struck out 14 and has opposing hitters batting .190 against him. Originally from Arlington, Texas, Medel transferred to Arizona from TCU following the 2014 season.
Ming the Magnificent: Junior left-hander Cameron Ming has shifted into the starting rotation the past two weeks and has pitched strongly in that role. In his first 14 appearances, Ming made one start, which was just a two-inning stint against Arizona State in a midweek battle. But the lefty has made his first two extended starts of the year in his most recent outings. Ming started against Utah on April 21 and gave up just one run on four hits over six innings, while striking out four and walking two. He didn't factor into the decision. Ming then started the series opener at Stanford on April 27 and again turned in a strong start. He went 6 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits, while striking out five. The Cats dropped a close 3-2 affair, but Ming held strong over 94 pitches. Ming is 5-1 on the year with a 2.43 ERA in 40 2/3 innings. He's nearly at a strikeout per inning with 38 on the season. He has been especially tough with two outs. Opposing batters are just 6 for 44 (.136) against Ming with two outs. Something else to keep an eye on: Ming is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings at Hi Corbett Field this season. He has 20 strikeouts to five walks at home.
Friendly Faces: There will be a few hitters in Arizona's lineup happy to see Washington this weekend. Last season as a freshman, catcher Cesar Salazar went 7 for 12 in three games against the Huskies with four runs scored and three RBI. Then a sophomore, Jared Oliva went 4 for 5 against Washington with five RBI and three runs scored. He hit his first home run of the season against the Huskies last year. Additionally, Alfonso Rivas, now a sophomore, went 4 for 10 over his final two games against the Huskies with two runs scored and an RBI. Michael Flynn had a good weekend on the mound against the Huskies as a freshman last year, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings total with three strikeouts.
Home at Hi Corbett: Arizona, 20-4, at home this season, has thrived playing at Hi Corbett Field this season, thanks in large part to the fan support from the Arizona faithful. During a 10-game stretch versus conference teams, three against USC, one against Arizona State, three against Oregon and three against Utah, Arizona has drawn a total of 38,907 fans for an average of 3,890. Arizona drew 5,208 fans to its Friday night affair with Oregon, marking the largest non-ASU crowd since the Wildcats moved to Hi Corbett prior to the 2012 season. Only one other time has Arizona drawn more than 5,000 fans for a non-Arizona State game. That came in 2013 when the defending national champion Wildcats opened their season against Coppin State and drew 5,145 fans. Three of Arizona's top six attendance figures at Hi Corbett have come with Jay Johnson as the head coach.

The reasoning for the picture is simple: Winning in college baseball is hard, and Johnson wants his squad to appreciate it. Johnson is third to Frank Sancet, who went 43-6-1 from 1950-1952, notching wins over such programs as Camp Pendelton, San Diego Marines, National University of Mexico and Casa Grande Apcos, and Jerry Kindall, who went 43-10.
