ARIZONA WILD-BATS: As has been demonstrated by five double-digit run outputs so far this season, the Wildcats offense is consistently dangerous...In three areas in particular, the Cats have excelled: Arizona has hit .329 against right-handed pitching, posted a batting average of .344 with runners on base, and swatted .487 from the leadoff spot in an inning...Additionally, the Wildcats have already been awarded 29 at-bats with the bases loaded this season, gathering nine hits to register a .310 batting average with the bags juiced...
Matthew Dyer (3x5) and
Nick Quintana (3x4) both already have three hits with the bases loaded across just nine games...When given a chance to extend an inning (in an at-bat coming with two outs already recorded), the Wildcats have combined to hit .345, with
Cameron Cannon leading the way on a .714 (5x7) two-out batting average.
MILESTONE MAN: With a pair of RBI on Friday night, infielder
Nick Quintana now has 101 RBI in a Wildcats uniform...After gathering 38 as a freshman in 2017, Quintana led the team with 55 RBI during the 2018 campaign...Quintana's 55 RBI in 2018 ranked as the eighth-most collected by a single player in the Pac-12 last year...Of his 101 career RBI, 62 (61.4%) of them have come while playing at home at Hi Corbett Field...Quintana's single-game career high mark in RBI is five, done twice: vs. Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 18, 2017 and vs. Grand Canyon, May 8, 2018...He has started and played in 124 games with the Wildcats and driven in multiple RBI in 25 of them...While Quintana has always been a strong presence at the plate for Arizona with a career batting average of .303, he has always dialed his game up to 11 with runners in scoring position...Throughout his three-year career with the Wildcats, Quintana has combined to hit .333 (55x165) with RISP.
BULLPEN BULLY: Through his first four collegiate appearances, reliever
George Arias Jr. has allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out four...Arias Jr. has limited opposing batters to a .238 batting average and stranded six-of-seven inherited baserunners...In his collegiate debut on Feb. 17 against UMass Lowell he worked 1.0 inning, allowing no hits and notching a strikeout...He has fanned at least one batter in three of his four outings this season.
SUPERMAN DOES GOOD, AUSTIN DOES WELLS: Freshman catcher/first baseman
Austin Wells has enjoyed a spectacular start to his collegiate career...Wells has started in all of the Wildcats nine games this year, and currently ranks third on the team with a .333 batting average...He has hit safely in 6-of-9 contests this season, with three-multi-hit performances...Wells currently ranks among the Pac-12's top players in runs scored (6th, 12) and doubles (T-3rd, 4)...In addition to those big numbers, Wells has showed patience at the plate - he is currently tied for the Wildcats team lead with seven walks, and has posted a .439 on-base percentage.
HOME COOKIN': Since 2016, the Wildcats have posted a record of 74-21 (.779) in home games at Hi Corbett Field...During that three-year stretch, Arizona has a record of 20-4-1 in home series going two or more games...The Wildcats last dropped a home series April 20-22, 2018 against Stanford (0-3)...Arizona has not lost a non-conference home series while
Jay Johnson has been head coach...During Johnson's tenure, the Wildcats have combined to hit .318 (1002x3155) while posting a 3.31 ERA (315x856.0) in home contests.
WALK THIS WAY: Arizona currently ranks second among all NCAA Divison I teams with 71 walks in just eight games...The Wildcats are just eight walk shy of first-place Florida A&M (79 BB; have played two more games than Arizona) and seven ahead of the next closest team, Eastern Kentucky (64 BB)...Arizona batters have drawn over one mile worth of walks this year, having accrued 6,390 feet in free passes...The Wildcats single-season record for walks was 398 in 1972; the club is currently on pace for 442 walks in 2019...Catcher/utility
Matthew Dyer, infielder
Nick Quintana, and catcher/first baseman
Austin Wells are tied for the team lead with seven walks...Currently, 12 Arizona players have logged more walks than strikeouts this year...The Wildcats .446 team on-base percentage is the second-best mark in the Pac-12 (first: ASU, .461) and the sixth-best mark nationally (first: New Mexico State, .554).
THAT'S OFFENSIVE: The Wildcats currently rank first or second in the Pac-12 in nearly every offenseive category...Arizona leads the conference in runs scored (106), RBI (95), doubles (24), home runs (10), total bases (162), and walks (71); they place second or tied for second on the circuit in slugging percentage (.503), on-base percentage (.446), hits (100), and triples (4)...In addition to strong team numbers, individual Wildcat batters appear among the conference's Top 10 players in the above listed stats 15 times....Over the first eight games of the season, Arizona is averaging 12.8 runs/game, 11.8 hits/game, 4.2 extra-base hits/game, and 7.9 walks/game...Arizona currently has five players that have started in all nine games this year and are hitting over the .300 mark.
DAY ONE DINGER: Wildcats C/1B
Austin Wells hit a three-run home run in his first collegiate at-bat on Friday night against UMass Lowell, becoming the first Arizona player to hit a HR in their first college AB since Jon Gaston accmplished the feat in 2006 (Feb. 3, Loyola Marymount)...Prior to Gaston, the feat was last accomplished by Nick Hundley in 2003 (Jan. 30, Brigham Young)...The last two players to hit a home run in the first series of their freshman year were Johnny Field (2011) and Joey Rickard (2010), both of which went to the same high school as Wells, Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas, Nevada.
RYAN HOL-GREAT: Wildcats outfielder
Ryan Holgate's 13 RBI from Feb. 15-20 were the most recorded by a Wildcats player in the first five games of the season since at least 1998...Twice over that stretch a Wildcats player had driven in 12 RBI over the first five games: Colin Porter in 1998 and Shelley Duncan in 2000...Holgate has hit safely in all but three games this year, with four multi-hit outings.
DOUBLE DOWN: Arizona infielder
Cameron Cannon kicked off the season with a red-hot opening series against UMass Lowell, collecting eight hits in 14 at-bats with six doubles...He now has seven doubles this year in just nine games...Cannon smacked a team-best 21 doubles in 56 games last season; the Arizona single-season record for doubles is 30, set by Dave Stegman in 1976 and tied by
JJ Matijevic in 2017.
