TUCSON, Ariz. – The 29th-ranked Arizona men's tennis team had a dominant performance on Friday afternoon as they swept the Washington Huskies 4-0 for their first Pac-12 win in five seasons. It was also their first win over the Huskies since 2003.
Â
"I'm proud of this team," head coach
Clancy Shields said. "We have dealt with a lot of adversity and we responded like true warriors. I'm glad we could keep our focus, stay the course and get a good win today. It has been almost five years since we got a regular season Pac-12 win. I'm glad we could get that off our back and now we can turn our attention to a very strong Oregon team on Sunday."
Â
Arizona got ahead early, taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
Jonas Maier and Stweart Block made quick work on court three with a 6-1 win and the 69th-ranked doubles pair
Jonas Ziverts and
Igor Karpovets clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court one against the 52nd-ranked doubles team in the country.
Â
No. 121 Malbasic was excellent in singles play, winning his math 6-1, 6-1 on court two.
Jonas Maier was just as impressive as he won 6-0, 6-1 on court six and
Jonas Ziverts took down No. 125 Enzo Sommer on court one 6-3, 7-5 on court one to clinch the match.
Â
Next up for the Wildcats will be No. 42 Oregon on Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m. MST.
