I want to open our first Wildcat Wednesday email of 2023 by wishing you all a very Happy New Year. This is an exciting time for the Wildcat Family as we continue our mission of developing student-athletes into academic, athletic and life champions as many of our programs will be competing in the coming months. Our athletics department has continued its legacy of excellence in the fall and will add more chapters as winter and spring sports compete while representing the Block A.

Both our basketball programs are off to tremendous starts to the season as we head into conference play. With a combined record of 28-4, Coach Lloyd and Coach Barnes both have their teams in the top 15 nationally as they hit the road this week. Arizona Women's Basketball will travel to Colorado and Utah, beginning with a Friday game in Boulder at 7 p.m. (MST) on Pac-12 Arizona. The Wildcats are coming off an impressive home sweep of the Oregon schools, which was capped by an eight-point win over No. 18 Oregon on Sunday.

Arizona Men's Basketball is off to Oregon for games against the Beavers and Ducks on Thursday and Saturday. The Cats' trip begins at Oregon State at 9 p.m. (MST) on ESPN2 before a primetime showdown versus the Ducks on ESPN at 4 p.m. (MST) on Saturday.

50 YEARS OF MCKALE HISTORY
This year will mark the 50th anniversary of our storied facility, McKale Center, which hosted its first game on Feb. 1, 1973. Our athletics department will celebrate the legacy and history of this icon of college basketball throughout the coming months, and we will share with you in future emails the special content that highlights the amazing history of McKale.

McKale Center opened during the coaching tenure of head coach Fred Snowden who was a trail blazer as the first African-American head coach of a Division I basketball program. All-American Bob Elliott, who played for the legendary Coach Snowden, has assisted Fred's daughter Stacey in commemorating this important anniversary. They are hosting a fireside chat at the Loft Cinema on Friday, Feb. 3 with doors opening at 5 p.m. For more information on this special event, please click here.

Bob Elliott, and his wife Beverly, have also spearheaded the launch of the African American Museum of Southern Arizona on the campus of the University of Arizona. Located in the Student Union Memorial Center, the museum will open on Saturday, January 14th and recognizes the African American history of Southern Arizona. You can read more about the exciting new tribute to the history of our community by clicking here.
