QUEENS, N.Y. - The 14th-ranked Arizona Wildcats defeated St. Johns on Wednesday, winning the doubles point and five singles matches on their way to a 6-1 victory.
Sasha Rozin and
Gustaf Strom kicked off the day with a win, defeating Martin Bugaj and Carl Gustavsson 6-2 before No. 6
Colton Smith and
Jay Friend cruised to a 6-2 win over Francisco Bascon and Leonardo Mileikowsky.
No. 45 Strom chalked up the first singles win of the day for Arizona, defeating Marco Cinotti 6-0, 6-2 on court three. Fifth-ranked Smith put the Wildcats one win away from clinching the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bascon, and No. 43 Friend clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-2 takedown of Gustavsson.
St. Johns got on the board with a win by Ryota Kaneda over Rozin, 6-3, 6-3.
Inaki Cabrera-Bello added to the Cats' team total, defeating Armando Sotelo in a gutsy 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win, and
Nick Lagaev rounded out the day with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Mileikowsky.
The Cats are back in action at the ITA National Indoor Championships Friday, Feb. 16 at 1:30 p.m. against No. 3 Texas.
