Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader, Smith Sets Program Record

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona Men's Tennis advanced to 7-1 after sweeping each of their Friday matches against Utah State and Loyola Marymount 7-0. 

The Wildcats began Friday with a match against the Utah State Aggies, taking the doubles point for a 1-0 early lead. First to finish was Eric Padgham and Oskar Jansson with a 6-3 win on court two. Clinching doubles was freshmen duo Zoran Ludoski and Filip Gustafsson on court three with a 6-4 win. In singles play, the first three Cats to win were Casper Christensen, Zoran Ludoski and Inaki Cabrera-Bello each in straight sets. Finishing fifth was No. 3 Colton Smith, with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over Sergi Mico Fenollar. The win earned Smith the honor of the winningest singles player in program history with 97 wins. The previous record holder was 2024 graduate Nick Lagaev with 96. Securing the sweep was freshman Glib Sekachov on court four with a win in the third set. 

Arizona kicked off their second match similarly, securing the doubles point with wins from junior duo Jay Friend and Eric Padgham and sophomore duo Cole Stelse and Alexander Rozin

Five of six Cats won their singles matches against the LMU Lions in straight sets, and Sekachov once against secured the sweep with in a second-set tiebreak.

Smith and No. 5 Jay Friend are both undefeated in singles play and currently lead the Cats in with 5-0 records. Friend also leads Arizona in doubles play, with a 5-0 record alongside partner Eric Padgham

The Cats are back in action for a ranked matchup on Sunday, Feb. 9 against No. 25 Pepperdine at 12:00 p.m. MST.
