WACO, Texas- No. 11 ranked and two-seed Arizona will advance to the semifinal at the Big 12 Championship after a 4-0 sweep over seven-seed Texas Tech Friday afternoon.
Arizona struck first by taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Finishing first was No. 62
Jay Friend and
Eric Padgham, winning 6-2 over Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglier. Senior duo Inaki Cabrera-Bello and
Colton Smith dropped their match 3-6 on court one, leaving it to court three to decide.
Filip Gustafsson and
Casper Christensen ultimately battled it out to a 7-5 win over Takeyasu Sekiguchi and Tyler Stewart for the win.
Giving Arizona the 2-0 lead in singles play was No. 4 Smith on court one after he skated past Piotr Pawlak 6-1, 6-3. Next up was sophomore
Alexander Rozin on court five with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Guglieri. Clinching the match for Arizona was No. 5 Friend on court two after battling back in set one to win the match in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-3.
Arizona is set to face No. 16 ranked and three-seed Baylor tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. MST in the semifinal round of the tournament. The other two teams remaining are is one-seed Texas Christian University and four-seed Central Florida.
