WACO, Texas- In their first season in the Big 12, No. 11 and two-seed Arizona will advance to the championship match of the Big 12 Tournament after taking down No. 16 and three-seed Baylor 4-2 on their home courts.
Saturday's match was off to a slow start for the Cats after they dropped the doubles point with losses on courts one and two. With a ticket to the championship on the line, the Cats began to battle back in singles play.
Finishing first and putting Arizona on the board was No. 5
Jay Friend on court two with a three-set, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, victory over No. 108 Zsombor Velcz. Over on court five, sophomore
Alexander Rozin was battling it out for a straight-set win that came in a tiebreak, winning 6-1, 7-6(5) over Louis Bowden. The Bears then leveled the score with a win on court four before No. 4
Colton Smith gave the Cats the lead once again with a 6-4, 7-6(6) win over No. 37 Devin Badenhorst.
The match ultimately came down to courts three and six, where freshman
Zoran Ludoski and senior
Casper Christensen were in closely contested third sets. Ludoski held off his opponent for the time it took Christensen to clinch the match with a 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1 defeat over Marko Miladinovic.
The Cats are set to take on No. 18 and four-seed Central Florida in the Final tomorrow, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. MST.
