Wes Johnson Signs Contract Extension Through 2029

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Athletics and R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois announced today that Arizona Triathlon Head Coach Wes Johnson has signed a three-year contract extension that will extend his tenure through the 2029 season.

"We are pleased to extend Coach Johnson and recognize the success our triathlon program has achieved during his tenure," Reed-Francois said. "He has invested in our student-athletes, the department, and the broader community while advancing a program aligned with the academic and competitive standards we value at Arizona Athletics. We look forward to the program's continued success in the years ahead."

Johnson guided Arizona Triathlon to back-to-back national championships in 2024 and 2025 and has produced seven CTCA All-Americans in the program's three years of existence. In 2025, Arizona won four of the five races they competed in and Kelly Wetteland went undefeated, placing first in every race. At the 2025 national championship, Johnson coached Wetteland to the individual national championship and led five Wildcats to finishes in the top 10.

"I am honored to continue leading this incredible program and want to thank R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois, Arizona President Dr. Suresh Garimella, and our sport administrator Cody Hendrickson for their unwavering support," Johnson said. "Our team motto is 'invest, commit, repeat' and with the support of our department, we are able to continue pushing this program to new heights while maintaining our goal of winning championships."

Arizona Triathlon competed in its first season in 2023 and Johnson has led the Wildcats for all three seasons.
