Utah Recap
Women's swimming and diving is now 3-0 after decisively defeating Utah, 171-119. The Cats exhibitioned the last four events of the meet. The Arizona women swept the podium in six events, going 1-2-3-4 in the 100 back and 500 free. Arizona also had at least two swimmers in the top three in 11 individual events as well as the two relays.
The men's swimming and diving team took a close victory against Utah (156-142) as the meet went down to the last relay event, the 200 free relay. Utah needed to finish 1-2 or 1-3 in the event to win, however
J.P. Beach,
Renny Richmond,
Chad Idensohn and
Chatham Dobbs hit the wall first. The men had multiple swimmers in the top three in eight individual events, also going 1-2 and 1-3 in the relays.
Eyeing the Competition
UCLA women's swimming and diving split its first two meets of the season. The Bruins competed against Oregon State, San Diego, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara and Florida Gulf Coast University in its home opener, winning against all five teams decisively. UCLA was defeated by Washington State, 119-143 in its first conference meet.
USC men's and women's swimming and diving is undefeated on the season. The men have notched victories against Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and CSU Bakersfield, all definite wins. The women beat out Washington State and Florida Gulf Coast.
History versus UCLA
Arizona has historically had close meets against UCLA. Last season, the Cats hosted the Bruins to win the meet, 160-140. The last time Arizona met UCLA on the road, it claimed a win with a score of 155-145.
History versus USC
The Arizona women fell at home against USC last season in a close meet, 144-156. On the road in the 2014-15 season, the Cats notched a decisive victory, 172-128.
The men earned an upset against USC last season at home, 172-126. The last time the men faced USC on the road, they dropped the meet, 118-182.
Annie Ochitwa: Unstoppable
So far this season, sophomore
Annie Ochitwa has won every event she has competed in, four individual events and four relay events. Ochitwa has finished first in the 100 fly against NAU/Hawai'i and Utah. Against the Utes, the sophomore won the event by more than two and a half seconds (54.36). Her other individual victories came in the 50 free (23.24) and 100 back (54.23).
The swimmer has also helped her team to first-place finishes in each relay, including two 200 medley relay races, the 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
All Hands On Deck
Arizona's points this season have come from a multitude swimmers and divers, 12 for the women and 11 for the men in individual events.
