Cats Win 7th Straight Conference Game

TUCSON, Ariz. –Michael Flynn tossed 3-plus scoreless innings in relief and Kyle Lewis drove in three runs to lift the Arizona Wildcats to a 10-3 win over California in front of 4,655 fans at Hi Corbett Field on Friday evening.

The Wildcats have now won six straight games and seven straight Pac-12 games, which is their longest conference winning streak since winning eight in a row in 2007. The Wildcats are now 37-17, 16-12 in league play and 10-2 in the month of May. Cal dropped to 23-29 and 13-15 in the Pac-12.

Cal jumped out to an early lead over Arizona in the series opener, scoring once in the first and again in the third to lead 2-0 heading to the bottom of the third. There, Cal Stevenson singled with two outs and stole second to move up a base. Alfonso Rivas followed with a walk to put two on for JJ Matijevic.

Matijevic lined his 28th double of the season to left field to score Stevenson and Rivas and tie the game at two apiece. Matijevic's 28 doubles are the second-most ever by an Arizona player in a single season. He's two shy of the record, set by Dave Stegman in 1976.

That remained the score until the Golden Bears plated a run in the sixth to go up 3-2. Starter JC Cloney exited in the inning with two outs, to give way to Flynn. The sophomore right-hander came in and struck out leadoff man Preston Grand Pre to end the inning.

Arizona's offense responded right away, scoring three runs in the sixth to grab a lead it would never give back. Cesar Salazar reached on an error and then moved to third base on a single from freshman Nick Quintana. Kyle Lewis followed Quintana with a base hit of his own to score Salazar and tie the game at three.

Quintana and Lewis then attempted a double steal, but Quintana was thrown out at third. Louis Boyd then singled to move Lewis to third and put runners on the corners with one out. Lewis then scored on a passed ball, and Boyd moved up a base. Following a walk to Stevenson, Rivas singled home Boyd to make it 5-3 and cap the scoring for the inning.

Arizona kept the pressure on in the seventh, adding five more runs. Jared Oliva opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground out from Salazar. Ryan Haug followed with a walk and Sawyer Gieseke was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Lewis then singled through the left side to score Oliva and Haug and make it 7-3. Boyd had an RBI single of his own as the next man up to score Gieseke.

Following a walk to Stevenson, Rivas hit a sharp ground ball to first base to score Lewis. Stevenson got held up in a rundown long enough to allow Boyd to score from second and make it 10-3.

Flynn had no problem protecting the lead for the Wildcats. He threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit, walking none and striking out five. He's now 5-0 on the season. Tanner Dodson took the loss for Cal to fall to 2-6.

Lewis and Boyd combined to go 4 for 9 with four RBI and four runs scored. Oliva went 2 for 5 with a run scored. Arizona will now try to win the series Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Left-hander Cameron Ming is scheduled to start for Arizona.
