CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 10 Arizona fell 2-4 to seven-seed Virginia Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Super Regional round.
Saturday's match kicked off with doubles play as Arizona lined up on courts one, two and three to decide who would claim the early lead.
The Cats first dropped court one, where Jay Friend and Eric Padgham fell 3-6 to No. 31 Dahlsberg/Dietrich. The remaining matches were going point for point before Virginia rose 6-4 on court three against Colton Smith and Alexander Rozin.
After taking three and losing three first sets, Arizona's path to victory relied on a match to split for a third. Sophomore Rozin fell first on court four, 6-4, 7-5, to James Hopper. Virginia also claimed court three for the 3-0 lead, after freshman Zoran Ludoski fell 6-4, 6-2 to Keegan Rice. Over on court five, freshman Filip Gustafsson opened the path of opportunity for Arizona after winning his second set and going to a third.Â

In the top-five showdown, Smith got it done in straight sets, taking the first 6-3 and the second 7-6 with a 7-9 tiebreak. The senior will close out his season undefeated in singles play at 17-0, and holds the program record for winningest singles player in history with over 100 victories.Â
Gustafsson claimed another point for the Cats in the super regional, winning in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, over Jangjun Kim on court five.
